Mission Statement

The mission of Kinetic Theatre is three-fold: To explore the issues facing our diverse and rapidly-changing world through the language of theatre; to value text, both classic and contemporary, as our primary source of inspiration; and to honor, value, and respectfully compensate the artist.

Andrew Paul has directed all seventeen of Kinetic Theatre’s Pittsburgh premiere productions: Joe Penhall’s Blue/Orange, David Mamet’s Romance, Conor McPherson’s adaptation of Strindberg’s The Dance of Death, Charles Marowitz’s Sherlock’s Last Case, Mike Bartlett’s Cock & Love, Love, Love, Peepolykus’ adaptation of Conan Doyle’s The Hound of the Baskervilles, the American premiere of Patrick Marber’s Three Days in the Country, Lucas Hnath’s The Christians, David Ives’ adaptation of Corneille’s The Liar, Jeffrey Hatcher’s Holmes and Watson, Florian Zeller’s The Father, and Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’ An Octoroon, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Speckled Band, Jeffrey Binder’s adaptation of Moliere’s Scapino, the American premiere of Donald Steven Olson’s Oscar & Walt, and the World premiere of Simon Bradbury’s The Illustrious Invalid. He directed extended runs of Holmes and Watson and The Hound of the Baskervilles at the Gulfshore Playhouse in Naples, Florida. His production of David Ives’ The School for Lies at San Diego’s North Coast Repertory Theatre was one of five nominees for the Craig Noel Award for Outstanding Production of 2014 – as voted upon by the San Diego Theatre Critics – and his production of George Brant’s award-winning play Grounded at Cockroach Theatre in Las Vegas garnered actress Mindy Woodhead Best Actress at 2015’s Vegas Valley Theatre Awards. Last summer, Andrew directed the West Coast premiere of Patrick Marber’s Three Days in the Country at the Antaeus Theatre in Los Angeles (L.A. Times Critic’s Pick). He previously co-founded the acclaimed Pittsburgh Irish & Classical Theatre (PICT) and served as the company’s producing artistic director from 1996 to 2013. Under his leadership, PICT produced more than a hundred plays, festivals devoted to the plays of Samuel Beckett, John Millington Synge, Harold Pinter, and Anton Chekhov, and two successful international tours: Andrew’s 2002 production of Brian Friel’s Faith Healer starring Bingo O’Malley played to acclaim at thirteen venues in Ireland and Northern Ireland and he appeared as an actor in the 2003 PICT production of Shaw’s Major Barbara which performed 14 sold-out performances at the Galway Arts Festival and transferred to Dublin for three weeks of performances at the Pavilion Theatre. In 2008, he directed and collaborated with Sir David Hare on the non-English language premiere of his play Stuff Happens at the Slaski Theatre in Katowice, Poland. In 2010, Andrew was a featured speaker at the World Theatre Conference in Baku, Azerbaijan. He recently directed his first feature film, the docudrama Cyril (written by Mark Clayton Southers), about renowned forensic pathologist Dr. Cyril Wecht. Cyril was an official selection at last year’s Three Rivers Film Festival and Charlotte Black Film Festival and won awards for Best Narrative Feature at the Denton Black Film Festival and Best Debut Feature at Singapore Film Carnival.

David Whalen is a Pittsburgh native and nationally recognized actor, having performed in New York City, Los Angeles, Europe, and throughout the United States.  He is a Kinetic Theatre Associate Artist and has starred in many productions with the company including The Christians, Sherlock’s Last Case, Three Days in the Country, Blue/Orange, among others.  He has collaborated with Director, Andrew Paul at PICT on more than 20 productions.  Other Pittsburgh area performances include Pittsburgh Public Theater (10 productions), City Theatre Company (7 productions), The Rep, Quantum Theater, and barebones productions.  David has played leading roles across the country in over 100 AEA productions, and over a dozen World and American Premieres at such theatres as:  Roundabout Theatre Company, The Guthrie, South Coast Rep, Alley Theatre, Baltimore Center Stage, Huntington Theatre Company, Hartford Stage, McCarter Theatre, Philadelphia Theatre Company, Arden Theatre, Laguna Playhouse, People’s Light, Syracuse Stage, Gulfshore Playhouse, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, Playmakers Rep, the Biennale Festival in Venice Italy, among others.  David has been named Performer of the Year from the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, nominated/awarded Kevin Kline, Barrymore, & Helen Hayes Awards. His many Film and Television credits include:  the upcoming Showtime Miniseries, The Loudest Voice, American Pastoral, Southpaw, The Last Witch Hunter, The Fault in Our Stars, 61*, My Bloody Valentine, Indictment: The McMartin Trial, Unsinkable, Insomnia, three Rivers, The First Seal, The Christmas Tree, True Blue, Bystander, Pensacola, Diagnosis Murder, among others. He has been on the faculty of Carnegie Mellon’s School of Drama, Villanova University, Point Park University, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and the Professional Conservatory at South Coast Rep.  More at David Whalen- Actor

Sam Tsoutsouvas returns to Kinetic Theatre where he is an associate artist and has appeared in The Father, The Liar, Three Days in the Country, Cock, Blue/Orange and The Dance of Death.
